Care words

# What does “peptide” actually mean?

The word can sound more mysterious than it is. The useful question is which product someone is talking about.

## Put a meaning beside the name

### Peptide: a description of what it is

Protein building blocks joined in a short string make a peptide. Insulin is an example.

Calling something a peptide does not settle its safety or legal status.

### Hormone: a signal in the body

A hormone carries signals within the body; GLP-1 is one that helps control hunger and blood sugar. Semaglutide is one medicine that copies this body signal.

Ask what the named medicine is intended to do for your own health concern.

### Approval: review of a particular medicine

The US drug agency's full name is Food and Drug Administration; its short name is FDA. It approves a medicine after reviewing the evidence for a particular use.

Ozempic and Wegovy are product names for semaglutide. The names Mounjaro and Zepbound are used for tirzepatide. These have approved US products. Checked September 26, 2026.

Ask for the product name and the use being discussed, rather than stopping at the ingredient name.

### Compounded: made for a particular need

Preparing medicine to order is known as compounding; a pharmacist or doctor can do this.

FDA has not approved these medicines prepared to order. That is true even if the ingredient is used in an approved drug. Rule checked September 26, 2026.

## Write down the product name and what is in it

For example, Ozempic is a product name. The active ingredient in it is semaglutide. An active ingredient is what makes the medicine work. Example checked September 26, 2026.

On your notes, leave room for both names. Then add the form being offered, such as a tablet or an injection.

That gives the person offering care something precise to explain. It also makes your next price or evidence question easier to ask.
