Idaho rules

Can an Idaho visit happen online?

In telehealth, the visit takes place remotely, using video, a phone call or another method. A clinician is the health professional who reviews your health or treats you.

Check what happens beyond the screen

  • Where will you be during the visit?

Idaho treats virtual care as taking place where the patient is physically located, as of September 30, 2026.

A clinician treating you while you are in Idaho usually needs an Idaho licence. There are limited exceptions. For example, a clinician may follow up with a patient they already know who is visiting Idaho. Rule checked September 30, 2026.

  • Can the person learn enough about your health online?

Idaho allows your first visit with a health professional to happen online. Idaho requires the standard of online care to match the standard for care given in person. Rule checked September 30, 2026.

The health professional must record your health history and current symptoms. They must check for health conditions or other reasons that could make treatment wrong for you. Rule checked September 30, 2026.

Ask what would lead to an examination in person or a test before a decision.

  • Does someone review your answers and health?

Idaho does not allow treatment decisions to rest entirely on a fixed form filled out online. That means a set list of questions answered on a screen. Rule checked September 30, 2026.

That rule does not mean every visit that starts with a form breaks Idaho law as of September 30, 2026.

Ask how the clinician learns more about your health and gives you a chance to raise questions.

  • Who responds after the visit?

As of September 30, 2026, Idaho requires services giving virtual care to provide follow-up access and contact with whoever is responsible for that care.

Write down the contact method before leaving the visit.

Ask about the particular medicine too

Controlled drugs are medicines with extra rules. In Idaho, orders for these medicines after an online visit must also follow federal rules. Requirement checked September 30, 2026.

An answer about online visits in general does not settle the rules for every medicine. Ask the clinician to explain the proposed product.
