Bring a question; keep the answer

Getting care

# What does getting care involve?

Care can start in a clinic room or with a licensed health professional online. In telehealth, the visit takes place remotely, using video, a phone call or another method. Start with what you hope to change.

## Bring notes, then ask for a plan

### Write down the reason for the visit

Describe the concern in your own words. Include earlier steps you have tried and the things you want explained.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, plus any health records you want to discuss.

### Expect a conversation about your health

For an online visit, Idaho requires the health professional to record your health history and current symptoms. They must check for health conditions or other reasons that could make the proposed treatment wrong for you. Rule checked September 30, 2026.

Ask which health conditions or medicines you take could affect the plan.

Ask for unfamiliar words to be explained. Leave space beside each answer for a question that comes up later.

### Ask what an examination or test would add

An online visit may leave the doctor needing a test or an examination in person. Under medical-board guidance, the doctor must organize the needed test or examination, or refer you to someone able to do so. Guidance checked September 17, 2026.

The group of state boards called the Federation of State Medical Boards provides this guidance. Ask how it applies to your visit.

### Leave with the next step in writing

Ask whether the next step is treatment, another conversation, an examination, a test or another kind of care. Ask why.

If a medicine is proposed, note its exact name, who supplies it, the bill and how follow-up works.

## Before an injection in a clinic

Idaho's patient guidance asks you to request the original medicine package. Ask whether it came from a pharmacy or was made at the clinic. Guidance checked September 30, 2026.

Try: “Can we go through the label together?” Keep the answer with the rest of your care notes.

## Read before the conversation

- [Idaho tips for patients](https://dopl.idaho.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IIACLI-Tips-for-Patients.pdf)

A short handout with questions about the product and the person providing care.

- [Medical-board guidance on remote visits](https://www.fsmb.org/siteassets/advocacy/policies/fsmb-workgroup-on-telemedicineapril-2022-final.pdf)

A longer document with advice for doctors about reviewing your health and arranging later care. It is guidance from a group of medical boards, rather than an Idaho law.
